Purchasing second hand items from an internet store that you don't know is scary. Sometimes making purchases from online dealers of second hand items worries a buyer to no end wondering if the item will show up and what the real condition the item will be in if it does show up. Most upstanding sellers do not want customers to be afraid of purchasing from them so they will post the items true condition. Many people shop on the big auction site thinking their purchases will be secure and if something isn't correct the big auction site will handle the problem. The big auction site does handle the problem by making the seller pay regardless of who's right and who's wrong. The seller in 99% of the complaints loses. The big auction site has buyer protection but the buyer will still have to pay the return shipping. Private online junk web stores are not big enough to offer a buyer protection program so the private internet stores have to spend a lot of time earning the trust of people. Some of the larger private online web stores have great return policies but the buyer will still have to pay the return shipping costs and most won't refund the ship to customer charges. Small online junk stores can be trusted if you read the item description and it states fully the condition of the item including the dings and wear along with any damage or non working condition.
Some junk stores have items that are well described and they do sell items that are broken and damaged to people that like to do restorations or use them as decor fix up projects. Some do state any damage to an item. Most of the items you can expect to have marks and dings from use and age so the buyer should be aware of exactly what they will be receiving for the money they spend and send for the purchase. Most items have a " No Return " policy on them because the junk stores selected are as honest about all the items up for sale as they can be. Some will not send out anything that have problems that the customer doesn't know about. Some will not accept payment or will return the payment before the used item is shipped if the buyer is not aware of a problem with the item. Junk Stores do like return customers and strive to have past customers come back and browse their store once in awhile even if they don't make future purchases. If you shop junk stores online make sure all the little details are know to you and the junk store owner states these things.
Most have to do the no return policy because they do sell second hand items and once in awhile they will get a customer making a purchase, taking parts and wanting a refund. This happens frequently on auction sites and other web marketplaces and last year (2010) even the biggest auction site has stiffened their rules concerning buyers making purchases, then sending back empty boxes to the seller after filing a complaint with their buyer protection programs and winning the complaint. Lots of antique mechanical items get purchased, parts are taken and the item is sent back for a refund.
I hope the honest junk stores can earn peoples trust somehow and some do answer emails about the used items up for sale. Some that did have a store on the big auction sites but closed them due to them raising their selling fees are the ones to explore for making online purchases. Some second hand sellers have active stores on the smaller auction sites and store venues with good feedback.
Thanks from for reading this article. I will post many more articles soon concerning what a buyer should look for when they want to deal with an unknown web site. Always ask questions if the condition is not clear and look for reply emails within 72 hrs.
Junk shops are great to browse and have many unusual items to view from past to present. Junks shops also provide a place for collectors to find the unique items they desire to help complete their collections of interest. My online junk store stocks all kinds of everyday and unique items to view. My junk store of coarse wants to earn a profit but I also would like to see it go beyond profit and have it be known as a place of trust with some community status that people enjoy coming to just to have a look around.
